Student Praises the Benefits of Scholarships
Kristin Caughman recently graduated from Newberry with a bachelor's degree in music education. She plans to attend the University of Georgia to obtain her master's degree in music therapy and, ultimately, would like to earn her doctorate in this field.
While at Newberry College, Kristin has been very involved on campus. A member of the Newberry College marching band, jazz band, jazz combo and concert band, she has filled the air with the wonderful sounds of her trumpet as a soloist for all of these organizations. She was invited to join Delta Omicron music fraternity because of her musical abilities and the Blue Key honor fraternity due to her strong academic record. While in Delta Omicron, she served in such positions as Secretary and Music Activities Chair. In addition to all of her academic feats, she is also a member of Alpha Xi Delta social sorority, where she has held the offices of Ritual and Academic Achievement. She is the 2004 winner of the Charles P. Pruitt Jazz Award for the Most Valuable Player, a highly coveted award voted on by her peers.
Kristin's success at Newberry College would not have been possible without the help of some very generous people. She has held a number of scholarship honors, including the Alumni Legacy Grant, the Alumni Association's Endowed Scholarship Award and the C.A. and Tilla West Kaufmann Endowed Music Scholarship award, which was established in 1963.
"If I hadn't received scholarships, I would not be where I am today," says Kristen. "It is hard to pay for college, but thanks to the help of alumni and friends, I have been able to attend this unique college."
What makes Newberry College so distinctive? Kristin continues, "It is the personal relationships that make it one of a kind. There are always people willing to help you, whether it's your best friend, your professor or the alumni like the Kaufmanns; you are never alone. My activities at Newberry have taught me to broaden my horizons. They have shown me to look outside of myself and to help others."
Kristin has seen the beauty of giving and understands how important it is to contribute. "I will definitely do all I can for Newberry College. I want to stay active and give back to the college that has made me who I am today."
