Values-Based Learning Program Touches The Lives of Interns

Thanks to donations that support the VBLP, six students from Newberry College were able to participate as interns in a program called SPLASH with Reformation Lutheran Church in Columbia, S.C. These student interns worked with more than 50 refugee and immigrant children over a six-week period during the summer. Each student was assigned to an age group and taught their group basic math and reading and writing skills. They also played games and took field trips.

The interns involved in the program were Karibean Finkley, Palmer Gaddy, Monica Hyde, Matthew Kingdom, Phillip Udom and Danielle Willie.

Matthew shared his thoughts about his experiences in the program: "These children touched my life, and I hope I was able to do the same. Money can not replace the things I've learned from these children."

The goal of Newberry College's VBLP is to provide opportunities for students to acquire knowledge and experiences that encourage involvement in service activities, benefit the community and enrich their lives through giving. Thank you to all of the donors who have already expressed support of this program. If you would like to make a contribution now to the endowment and/or be a part of the program through an estate gift, contact Laura Beth Shealy at 803-321-5651 or LauraBeth.Shealy@newberry.edu.
